Bremen-based shipyard Luerssen is to acquire the Hamburg-based Blohm+Voss shipyard to strengthen its repair and refit activities for yachts, naval, passenger and commercial ships, and to enhance its naval newbuild activities.

Blohm+Voss has worked on multiple cruise ship repair and conversion projects, and this business will be retained as part of the deal.

“With the acquisition of Blohm+Voss we are taking over a shipyard with a strategically advantageous location and versatile production facilities,” said Peter Luerssen, managing partner at Luerssen Maritime Beteiligungen. “We want to use these facilities to complement our existing refit and repair activities and also to offer our customers an ever better service.”

Pending approval from the German Fair Trade Commission, Luerssen will combine six specialised shipyards with approximately 2,800 employees in Northern Germany.
