The Port of Tyne in the UK opened its 2015 cruise season with a maiden call from Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ (CMV) newest flagship Magellan on 28 March.
Berthed at the Ports Northumbrian Quay, Magellan was welcomed by port representatives including Susan Wear, director of corporate affairs. To mark Magellan’s inaugural call, Wear presented CMV with a hand-blown piece of coloured glass highlighting the Tyne’s tradition of glass making.
This year, the Port of Tyne expects to handle more than 600,000 passengers and 27 cruise calls. This includes an inaugural call from Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Symphony, while Oceania Cruises’ Marina and Nautica will offer their first transit calls from Tynemouth. Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Voyager and Holland America Line’s Eurodam will also operate transit calls from the port.
Meanwhile, UK-based Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and CMV will offer additional departures from the Port of Tyne and will both operate a number of transit calls for the first time.
“Cruise departures are growing with many more people choosing to start their holiday directly from the Port of Tyne and it is really good news that CMV and Fred. Olsen are both extending their departures to include new and exciting destinations like St. Petersburg, Morocco, Spain, and the Azores,” said Wear.
Port of Tyne already has 32 cruise calls scheduled for 2016.
