The European Investment Bank (EIB) is to provide French port Marseille Fos with €50 million (US$58.5 million) to support five key infrastructure development project.

The agreement was signed on by Marseille Fos CEO Christine Cabau Woehrel and EIB vice president Ambroise Fayolle on 28 May. The funding will enable the port to reorganise the Corsica and North Africa ferry passenger terminals and enlarge the Passe Nord access point for mega cruise ships. This will improve the services it provides to passenger ferries and cruise ships.

“We now have the investment capacity to continue developing our infrastructure and to reinforce our international scope,” said Cabau Woehrel.

Other port development projects will be focused on enhancing facilities for container vessels.

“I am very happy that funding of this scale supports the attractiveness and development of France’s premier port,” said Fayolle. “By giving the port the means to equip itself with modernised and efficient infrastructure geared to market demand, the EIB has strengthened the capacity, competitiveness and international influence of a port complex that is unique in France. Our goal is to accompany the port’s long-term development and support the site’s businesses and employment.”
