Cruise and ferry passengers calling at the French port of Marseilles can now visit a new leisure area and shopping centre.
First proposed in 2003, Les Terrasses du Port was developed by retail property specialist Hammerson and features various underground, ground-level and rooftop leisure areas and a shopping centre. It is located adjacent to the cruise and ferry terminals, including the ferry embarkation zones for cars, which has been conserved as part of the development.
Les Terraces du Port marks the third stage of transforming the waterfront at La Joliette – one of the port’s oldest areas – under an initiative conceived in 1998 by the Marseilles Fos port authority and the vast urban renewal project Euromediterranee. In 2011, the organisations opened the Silo theatre, while the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations and the convention/exhibition centre Villa Mediterranees were opened last year.
Marseilles welcomes around 2.6 million cruise and ferry passengers a year.
