Meyer Werft has cut the first piece of steel for Star Cruises’ latest newbuild at its Papenburg yard in Germany.

Marking the start of the construction phase, the steel-cutting ceremony was attended by representatives from Meyer Werft and Star Cruises. Tan Sri Lim, chairman of Star Cruises, started the plasma torch to cut the steel.

“We are glad to continue the long lasting relationship, which started 20 years ago with building of SuperStar Leo,” said Bernard Meyer, managing partner of Meyer Werft.

Designed specifically for the Asian market, Star Cruises’ 150,000gt ships will be 330 metres long and will each accommodate 4,500 passengers in 1,682 cabins. The ships will be delivered in autumn 2016 and 2017.

Power and automation technology provider ABB is to deliver complete electrical power plants and propulsion systems for both newbuilds.
