Meyer Werft has started to paint the artwork on the hull of Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest newbuild Norwegian Escape, which is due to debut this November in Miami, US.
Designed by marine wildlife artist and ocean conservationist Guy Harvey, the artwork spans more than 1,000 feet in length from bow to stern. The custom-designed artwork illustrates two underwater scenes of marine wildlife, including Harvey’s signature sailfish, sting rays, sea turtles, whale sharks and a variety of tropical fish.
“I’m so proud to showcase the incredible marine life of the Caribbean on the largest canvas a human could possibly paint,” said Harvey. “After weeks of work, the artisans at Meyer Werft have done an incredible job of recreating my art on such a vast format. I’m overjoyed at the level of detail that has been achieved and I can't wait to see Norwegian Escape in her element out on the ocean.”
To create the artwork, Meyer Werft’s engineers used a laser to project the design onto the hull and then pencilled the lines before applying the paint by hand.
“We had great expectations for this artwork, which reflects the marine life of the spectacular waters on which this ship will sail,” said Andy Stuart, president and COO of Norwegian. “Guy’s vision for Norwegian Escape’s signature artwork is the perfect complement to everything this ship stands for.“
Currently under construction at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg yard in Germany, Norwegian Escape is the company’s largest ship to date and will be the first of its Breakaway Plus vessels. It will accommodate 4,200 passengers and include all of the innovative features found on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway.
Norwegian Escape will also offer various industry firsts, sports and water park facilities, private dining options, and new dining and bar concepts. Entertainment options will include two Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals headlining in the Escape Theater, and an exclusive Supper Club offering that enables guests to enjoy dinner and a 360° post-modern cabaret. In addition, documentaries produced by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation will be shown in staterooms to educate guests about marine conservation.
Guests can stay in the line’s signature luxury ship–within-a-ship complex – The Haven by Norwegian – as well as solo traveller studios, and various accommodations for families, multi-generational groups, spa enthusiasts and more.
From 14 November 2015, the 164,600gt Norwegian Escape will be the largest cruise ship to homeport year-round in Miami, US, where she will offer weekly seven-day cruises to the eastern Caribbean. Destinations on her itineraries include St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas.
