More families with children under the age of 18 have taken a more active interest in cruising in recent years, according to UK sales data from MSC Cruises.
Although cruising is still popular with couples aged between 46 and 65 – the key age bracket – MSC’s sales data indicated that more passengers outside of this age range have opted for a cruise holiday in recent years.
The data showed that couples aged 46-65 accounted for 36% of MSC’s total UK cruise bookings, while 21% of the market share was held by families, 22% by couples aged 65 and over, 6% by couples aged 31-45 and 3% by couples aged 18-30. The remaining 10% of cruises were booked by single travellers (7%) and groups (3%).
“Though we are very pleased that our most popular demographic – those aged between 46 and 65 – is continuing to enjoy cruising, it’s exciting for us that more and more people are choosing a cruise for their holiday,” said Alessandra Pierleoni, marketing director at MSC. “Cruising is a great option for families, as well as those at the younger end of the market, and we anticipate developments within the cruise industry as a result of this new, keen interest.”
According to MSC’s figures, families favour cruises in the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. The West Mediterranean was also popular with passengers aged 18-45, with 14% booking itineraries in this region.
MSC also offer a variety of other family-friendly itineraries.
