MSC Cruises’ MSC Magnifica has left Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam after a 17-day drydock.

The 2,500-passenger ship, which is due to resume service from Hamburg in Germany, arrived at the yard on 20 October and was berthed at its largest dock.

During the drydock, which took place while the ship’s 800 crew members were onboard, Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam replaced around 47 tonnes of steel and the rudders, and also cleaned and painted the vessel.

“The rudders were a major job, we sealed off and pressurised the whole area,” said Marc Derks, project manager, Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam. “Fortunately we have a very large machine shop on site, which was invaluable to ensure the rudder renewal remained on schedule. We also worked very closely with the rudder manufacturer Rolls-Royce.”

On 2 December, Saga Cruises’ Saga Sapphire will arrive at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam. Meanwhile, Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen recently handled Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ Astor and Marco Polo.
