Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has agreed a new €700 million contract with Meyer Werft for its largest ship yet, which is expected to be delivered in October 2015.

At 163,000 tons, 4,200-passenger Breakaway Plus will be bigger than the NCL Breakaway-class ships currently being constructed at the Papenburg-based yard in Germany and will incorporate unique design elements from these two ships.

Norwegian Cruise Lines CEO Kevin Sheehan said: “Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway have garnered significant attention in the marketplace with their innovative design, rich stateroom mix and world-class amenities. Building on that momentum, along with Meyer Werft’s expertise and efficiency in the design and construction process, we are extending the excitement and anticipation with a new, larger edition Breakaway Plus class ship to further distinguish the Norwegian brand. This new order further solidifies our commitment to continued innovation in terms of the guest experience and will incorporate technical and environmental advances as well.”

The new vessel, along with the option for a second ship which would be scheduled for delivery in spring 2017, will be the tenth and eleventh built by Meyer Werft for the cruise company.

Meyer Werft managing partner Bernard Meyer said: “We are pleased that Norwegian Cruise Line has decided to expand and enlarge its exciting Breakaway class at Meyer Werft. Our companies have a long history together and we appreciate Norwegian Cruise Line’s continued commitment to Meyer Werft.”

The Norwegian Breakaway bow – at 361 tons, 72 feet long, 101 feet wide and more than 39 feet high – was lowered during a 30-minute milestone moment on 17 October.

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway are due to be delivered in late April 2013 and mid-January 2014 respectively.
