Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has ordered a second Breakaway Plus ship from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, which is due for delivery in spring 2017.

Both NCL’s first Breakaway Plus ship – which should be completed in October 2015 – and the second ship will be the largest in the line’s fleet and offer design features and innovations similar to those found on the current Breakaway-class.

The combined contract cost of the two, 163,00-gt Breakaway Plus ships is around US$1.4 billion and will be largely covered by export credit financing.

“The incredible response we've received from guests, travel agents and media regarding Norwegian Breakaway only reinforced our decision to add a second Breakaway Plus vessel to our fleet,” said Kevin Sheehan, NCL’s CEO. “With groundbreaking elements yet to be announced and an additional deck to incorporate further innovations, our two Breakaway Plus ships will provide guests even more ways to experience all that the new Norwegian has to offer.”

Meyer Werft previously constructed NCL’s four Jewel-class ships and delivered Norwegian Breakaway – the first of the line’s two Breakaway-class vessels – on 25 April this year. It is scheduled to deliver the second, Norwegian Getaway, in January 2014.
