Delivering a great guest experience is among the most important priorities for passenger shipping operators, with each voyage having the potential to be an unforgettable memory for the people stepping onboard. Interior design plays a crucial role in delivering on this promise, from big, impactful experiences in the most impressive public spaces to the quiet moments in a comfortable cabin. Many of the designers and executives in the 2024 issue of Cruise & Ferry Interiors express their sense of responsibility and inspiration to create those moments, demonstrating the centrality of the guest in marine interior design.

This is especially true for interior designer Liz Schneider, who was inspired by the sense of discovery and wonder a cruise can create for a guest in developing the concept for our cover story for this issue. In our cover story, she discusses her own journey in the cruise interiors industry and how she hopes to create memories through design.

Our keynote sees Jon Ingleton speak with Marco Pastorino, founder and now outgoing managing director of Independent Maritime Advisors (IMA). Pastorino founded IMA nearly 15 years ago, and the company embarked on a low-key but impactful partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings that saw it become one of the most highly regarded newbuild and refurbishment teams in the industry. After Norwegian’s acquisition of IMA in April 2024, Pastorino shares his shipbuilding and refit memories from his time at the helm of the firm, providing an exclusive insight into its success.

The ‘Designed to last’ feature, meanwhile, explores the movement towards longer-lasting interiors and products. A wide range of passenger shipping executives, interior designers and product manufacturers offer their perspectives on how operators can create spaces which are timeless, cost-effective and more environmentally friendly.

Our design legend for 2024 is Tom Graboski, founder of TGA Design. In conversation with CFI, Graboski reflects on a pioneering 40-year in cruise ship design, which has seen him sleep on tablecloths, work onboard the world’s largest cruise ships, and help to transform the way we think about signage.

Elsewhere, we take a closer look at six newbuilds, share design perspectives from industry experts, and hear from designers, outfitters and suppliers in our interior commentaries and interviews. Finally, we profile companies involved in the interiors sector in the CFI Featured Partners section
