Cruise passengers arriving at Jamaica’s Ocho Rios port can now reach tourist attractions in Spanish Town and Kingston 30 minutes faster, thanks to a new US$700m highway.
Built by China Harbour Engineering Company, the 66km North-South link of Highway 2000 has significantly reduced travel times between Jamaica’s north and south coasts. It is also expected to drive additional tourism developments, including three hotels with nearly 2,400 rooms in the Mammee Bay area.
“The newly opened North-South Highway will open up significant development opportunities and make Kingston more accessible from our major tourist regions,” said Paul Pennicook, Jamaica’s director of Tourism. “Not only will these developments increase tourism, but will directly benefit the local people and generate new jobs, especially for Jamaica’s next generation of up and coming tourism professionals.”
