Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is to build two additional ships for Viking Ocean Cruises, which will be delivered in mid 2016 and early 2017.

The vessels will be sister ships to the two 47,800 gt ships Viking ordered last year. The first, Viking Star, is currently under construction at the Fincantieri yard and is scheduled for delivery in May 2015, while the second ship will debut in winter 2016.

“The interest in and popularity of our current ocean itineraries has been incredible, and they are selling at an unprecedented rate,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking Cruises. “This new order allows us to offer consumers in our other markets the opportunity to explore the world in ways they have never experienced before through our destination-focused itineraries.”

Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, said: "This new order strengthens our partnership with Viking, a group that is displaying remarkable dynamism and ability to achieve important market goals.”
