New shows for Quantum

Royal Caribbean International has released details of its entertainment line-up for its latest newbuild Quantum of the Seas, which will debut in November.

Featuring live bands, Broadway performances and multidimensional shows with digital projections and live performers, the programme was developed in collaboration with Emmy- and Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth, who is the line’s Quantum Experience Advisor for entertainment.

“The level of ingenuity, creativity and sheer imagination that has gone into the creation of the entertainment onboard Quantum of the Seas is staggering,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, executive vice president of operations, Royal Caribbean. “We are taking a quantum leap in all aspects of ship design and programming with the Quantum class, but the entertainment is especially remarkable. These shows and productions are truly one-of-a-kind, and we are confident that our guests will be wowed.”

Designed by US-based 5+design, the iconic Two70° is a three-deck, multidimensional space with floor-to-ceiling glass windows located at the stern of the ship. In addition to seating, dining areas and a two-storey mixology bar, Two70° also features six Roboscreens each measuring over seven feet high and controlled by powerful robotic arms. The screens can be programmed to move in synchronisation with live performers and aerialists as they travel through the performance space, surrounding the spectators with lights, music and sound.

Two70° also has Vistarama technology – a digital filming and warping process – which combines 18 projectors to transform the floor-to-ceiling glass wall into a 100 ft wide by 20 ft high surface for digital projections in 12K resolution.

The main shows in Two70° include ‘Starwater’ and ‘Virtual Concert. Created by Royal Caribbean’s Moment Factory, ‘Starwater’ is features video mapping, special effects and human artistry, while ‘Virtual Concert’ includes musicians, groups and bands that will be projected across the Vistarama and all six Roboscreens.

“The entertainment in Two70° is simply magical,” said Nick Weir, vice president of entertainment at Royal Caribbean International. “There is an incredible team of risk takers and dreamers here at Royal Caribbean. Together, we saw the magnitude of what this room could do and shot for the stars. We’ve always brought the best of land to sea, but in Two70° we are creating something that has never been done anywhere else in the world.”

Created to showcase live music, the Music Hall will host the Tribute Bands Program, musicians, DJs and themed parties such as the Mamma Mia! After Party. The venue will also host ‘Wink’, a late-night, adults-only performance featuring the Royal Theater cast.

Seating 1,300 guests, The Royal Theater will offer performances of ‘Sonic Odyssey’, which features a nine-piece live orchestra with a cast of singers, dancers, aerialists and gymnasts. The show was created by William Close, Under The Radar Chicago and Art House Live and includes a band consisting of unique instruments such as the Earth Harp, a Drum Wall with 136 drums, a Vocal Percussion Jacket, a Violin Dress and more. Guests will also be able to enjoy performances of the Tony Award-winning musical MAMMA MIA!

“Drawn from the hottest shows across the world of entertainment and cleverly blended with Royal Caribbean’s innovation in technology and venues, this really does provide a Quantum step forward in entertainment anywhere in the world let alone at sea,” said Stuart Leven, managing director UK and Ireland, Royal Caribbean International. “Underpinning once again, the fact that Royal Caribbean is looking to attract new people into the brand who seek a holiday which is unbeatable.”

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, Quantum of the Seas and sister ship Anthem of the Seas – which will debut in Southampton, UK, in April 2015 – will introduce a new set of first-at-sea onboard experiences. These include the Ripcord by iFLY skydiving experience; North Star, a glass capsule that transports guests more than 300 ft above the ship; SeaPlex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea with bumper cars, roller skating and more; and the cruise line's largest and most advanced staterooms to date. Guests also will enjoy the new Quantum-class Dynamic Dining, which offers 18 restaurant concepts including specialty restaurants created with partner-chefs Jamie Oliver, Devin Alexander and Michael Schwartz.
