Tour operator Iceland Travel will be running a new volcano shore expedition for younger cruise passengers from 2013.
Named ‘Let’s go Volcano’ the five-hour tour will transport up to 10 ‘fit and active’ people by a ‘super truck’ specially-designed for the country’s rugged terrain.
Iceland Travel shore excursions and cruise manager Liz Gammon said: “We are finding that alongside the classic sightseeing motor coach tours, we really need to cater to the remaining clientele too and attract a new and younger passenger audience. We want to devise a product that offers great value for money and an unforgettable experience.”
Passengers on the shore expedition will experience lunar-like lava fields, a bracing hike to the top of a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater and a journey into the underworld through an unmarked cave, which is reached with the aid of GPS. As Iceland is also famed for its seafood, a special lobster soup will be served, prior to a mountain drive to view Iceland’s renowned alfresco spa, the Blue Lagoon.
With Iceland now inseparably linked to the word volcano, today’s new tour offering focused upon Iceland´s dramatic lava landscapes and volcanoes and the team took part in a pilot trip to help refine the exclusive day tour.
Gammon said, “With this in mind we took off to the Reykjanes peninsula just outside of Reykjavik. The surrounding landscape is made up predominantly of lava fields, geothermal areas and volcanic craters – both extinct and active – and it was here that our team put the finishing touches to their new and exclusive day tour named ‘Let’s go Volcano’.”
