Cruise New Zealand is set to handle 33 ships, 200,000 passengers and 78,000 crew members during the 2013-2014 season, which starts next month.
Australians are expected to account for half of the passengers visiting New Zealand’s ports, while the number of American tourists is set to rise to 19 per cent, with more North Americans capitalising on the growing number of turnarounds cruises at Auckland’s new Shed 10 cruise terminal. UK visitors will provide the third largest visitor market.
With 121 visits expected by the end of next year, the organisation also predicts the cruise industry will generate 5,361 jobs and a total of NZ$311 million in revenue, with the ports of Northland, Nelson, Otago and Southland all set for economic growth.
