Costa Cruises’ 2,800-passenger Costa Deliziosa called at the Port of Palma on 18 April, becoming the first cruise ship to berth the port’s newly extended Poniente Quays.
The €37.8 million project was started in 2011 by the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands after the main shipping lines expressed an interest in including Palma de Majorca as a port of call on their routes.
The expanded facilities include four berthing lines over 300-metres long, which enable up to seven cruise vessels to berth simultaneously at the Port of Palma.
The project’s completion was celebrated on 15 April, during a ceremony attended by the development ministry inspector, the port authority chairman, José Mª Urrutia, and representatives of the CYES-SATO-OHL consortium.
