Puerto Rico welcomed a record 17,847 passengers and six cruise ships at the docks of Old San Juan on 25 February.
The figure surpasses the previous records set on 31 December 2014 when 15,776 passengers visited Puerto Rico, as well as those set on 8 January and 4 February 2015, when 16,712 and 16,395 guests called at the port respectively.
Six cruise ships called in Puerto Rico on 25 February including Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum of the Seas, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy, MSC Cruises’ MSC Divina, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Glory, Holland America Line’s Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. In total, Puerto Rico welcomed 19 cruise ships from ten cruise operators between 21 and 28 February.
“The arrival of the 17,847 cruise passengers represents an economic impact of about US$2 million to the economy of Puerto Rico,” said Luis Muniz Martinez, deputy director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. “Our efforts to promote the island as a cruise destination continue to make Puerto Rico the five-star destination of choice in the region.”
To boost cruise traffic during the low season, Puerto Rico Port Authority has made several infrastructure improvements. Pier 1 has been extended to enable it to accommodate Disney Cruise Line’s ships, while Pier 3 has been improved to cater for Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships.
