Salvage workers from Ship Recycling, the consortium responsible for dismantling Costa Cruises’ Costa Concordia at a yard in Genoa, have found human remains in a cabin on the ship’s eighth deck.

The remains are believed to be those of 32-year old Indian waiter Russel Rebello, the last of 32 victims to be recovered from the wreck of Concordia, which partially capsized and sank on 13 January 2012 after striking a reef off the Italian island of Giglio.

In a post on his Facebook page, Rebello’s brother wrote: “My younger brother has finally been found on deck 8 in a cabin of the wrecked Concordia. I don’t have words to express. Just my pain, my tears and my heart pounding harder and my body trembling when I broke the news to my parents.“

Initially, salvage workers had hoped to find Rebello when the 114,000gt vessel was lifted from the Giglio reef in preparation for its journey to Genoa, which took place earlier this year. The remains of Italian passenger Maria Grazia Trecarichi, were found in October 2013 just three weeks after the ship was pulled upright.
