Rolls-Royce is to install its Autocrossing system on 13 of Norwegian operator Fjord1’s new environmentally friendly ferries.
Currently being built by three yards in Turkey and two yards in Norway, each of the 13 ferries will also be fitted with two of Rolls-Royce’s Azipull propellers and accompanying propeller control systems.
“Our passengers will be part of the most environmentally friendly and modern transportation concept ever seen in the Norwegian fjords,” said Dagfinn Neteland, CEO of Fjord1. “The technology from Rolls-Royce enables us to deliver this promise.”
Rolls-Royce’s Autocrossing system will automatically control the vessels’ acceleration, deceleration, speed and track, while the Azipull thrusters will respond to environmental conditions to maximise efficiency. The vessel’s captain will supervise the automatic system and intervene using traditional manoeuvring systems if needed. If the captain is not able to take manual control, the system stops the vessel at a safe distance from the quayside and keeps it safely positioned automatically until further action can be taken.
Using the new Rolls-Royce technology will enable Fjord1 to meet the annual energy consumption limits the Norwegian government has set for the new generation of environmentally friendly ferries.
“We are proud to take part in the ongoing renewal programme for ferries that connects communities along the long Norwegian coastline,” said Andreas Seth, senior vice president of Automation and Control at Rolls-Royce. “The government deserves praise for opting for both innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. It makes it possible for the maritime industry to deliver its latest technology.”
