Germany-based Rostock University Medical Center is to provide telemedicine services for crew and passengers sailing onboard AIDA Cruises’ 11 cruise vessels.

Initially, AIDA’s shipboard doctors will use satellites to send x-rays and ultrasound scans, or hold telephone conferences with the university’s Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology team in real time, regardless of where the ship is located. This will allow the university team to provide expert advice for further examination, analyse the findings and share diagnoses.

“The Rostock University Medical Center has great expertise in telemedical applications, which we will utilise from now on for the benefit of our guests and crew members,” said Jens Tülsner, vice president of medical at AIDA Cruises.

Christian Schmidt, medical director at the university medical centre, said: “This partnership creates a new link between tourism and medicine, and thereby represents another milestone in health management in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.”
