Lloyd’s Register (LR) and cruise company Royal Caribbean Group have joined forces to improve safety, operational efficiency and sustainability across the cruise industry.

The partnership, which was launched at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, Florida, will involve LR providing classification, risk management and technical consultancy services to Royal Caribbean Group.

In addition, the firm will oversee the transfer of more than 25 of the group’s cruise ships into the LR class and integrate marine management systems and ship emergency response services.

“This partnership goes beyond technical support,” said Palle Laursen, executive vice president and head of marine at Royal Caribbean Group. “By working together, LR and Royal Caribbean Group are leveraging our collective expertise to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the cruise industry.”

According to both LR and Royal Caribbean Group, the partnership aims to set new benchmarks for operational “excellence and environmental responsibility”.

“Together, we are ensuring that safety, operational efficiency and sustainability remain at the forefront of the maritime sector, while also driving innovation that will define the future of cruising,” said Andy McKeran, chief commercial officer at LR. “As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the strategic partnership between LR and Royal Caribbean Group will play a vital role in shaping the industry’s future, creating a safer, greener and more technologically advanced maritime world for generations to come.”
