Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. received the 2014 Maritime Safety Award in recognition of the integrated Safety Command Centre onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum of the Seas.

Presented by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and Lloyd’s Register, the award recognises the Royal Caribbean’s efforts to improve safety at sea and protect the marine environment.

“Nominations for this award are made by members of the global maritime industry and there can, of course, be no finer recognition than that given by one’s peers,” said Trevor Blakeley, chief executive of RINA. “While it is always to be hoped that it will never be used for its intended purpose, the integrated Safety Command Centre provided by Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd has the potential to make a significant contribution to improving maritime safety, should that need ever occur.”

Designed to be used from the moment an incident occurs to when the ship arrives in port, the Safety Command Centre onboard Quantum of the Seas serves as a central point for personnel to make damage assessments, contact shoreside resources, analyse videos and drawings, access navigation information and an overview of the ship’s machinery overview.
