Royal Caribbean International’s Star of the Seas has set sail in the open ocean for the first time as it embarked on a series of sea trials.

Over 11 days, more than 2,000 specialists in naval architecture, engineering, navigation and design will test Star of the Seas in a range of technical examinations to ensure its seaworthiness.

Tests will examine how the ships moves through the open water and pushing its engine performance to its maximum, along with many more. Star will cover hundreds of miles before the ship enters its final phase of construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland.

Star of the Seas will feature eight distinct neighbourhoods, including waterslides, seven pools and more than 40 venues for dining, drinking and entertainment. It will set sail on its inaugural voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida, in August 2025.
