The Port of San Diego, City of San Diego and Civic San Diego celebrated a significant construction milestone in the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Phase I project on 20 May, when traffic lanes were moved between Navy and B Street Piers.
The development will enable the group to begin construction of a 105-foot wide waterfront promenade, public gardens and two shaded pavilions that will house a café, a visitor information centre, two ticket kiosks and a public restroom.
In order to commemorate the event, the Port of San Diego hosted an event featuring speeches from the City of San Diego’s mayor Bob Filner and various representatives from the city’s council, the port and Civic San Diego.
“This project is driven by a simple concept: San Diego’s waterfront should be for people, not cars,” said Kevin Faulconer, chair of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Joint Powers Authority. “Today we’ve reached the halfway point on our mission to create a world-class waterfront for San Diegans, visitors and future generations.”
San Diego’s North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Phase I project began in January 2012 and is scheduled for completion in 2014.
