Danish ferry operator Scandlines is to explore the use of e-methanol after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with engine manufacturer Caterpillar Motoren.

The MoU will enable the two companies to investigate the possibility ofconverting Scandlines’ current MaK diesel engines to run on e-methanol, a fuel source which the ferry operator suggests can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 95 per cent. The aim of the agreement is for Caterpillar Motoren to provide a test engine by 2025. If this test engine meets Scandlines expectations, the first diesel engine could be converted in 2027.

Scandlines currently operates six hybrid ferries and is expecting delivery of an emission-free ferry, called Futura, which is under construction at Cemre shipyard in Turkey, by the end of 2024. The company has committed to operating with zero direct emissions by 2040.
