The Panama Canal’s cruise season opened on 2 October when Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Millennium transited the waterway as part of a 15-day trip from San Diego, California to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
More than 200 transit calls are expected this season, including National Geographic’s Sea Lion and Windstar Cruises’ Wind Spirit, which offer shorter itineraries along the west coast of Central America. Three vessels – Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Imagination and Carnival Legend and Costa Cruises’ Costa Atlantica – will also make inaugural visits to the Panama Canal this season.
The Panama Canal will also mark its 100th anniversary in 2014.
