Four cruise operators have been awarded Green Gateway Partners Awards by the US Port of Seattle in recognition of their environmental stewardship.

Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line (HAL) all received awards, which were presented by analysts from Cascadia Consulting Group and Glosten Associates. To achieve a Green Gateway Partners Award, operators must participate in the port’s At-Berth Clean Fuels programme or use shore power when docked in Seattle.

“These awards show that maritime businesses are doing the right thing for the environment every day,” said Tay Yoshitani, Port of Seattle CEO. “Their efforts have removed hundreds of tonnes of pollutants from Puget Sound air.”

For the second consecutive year, HAL achieved the port’s highest platinum award for its use of low-sulphur fuels beyond the required levels, its use of marine sanitation devices and zero discharge of ballast water in Puget Sound.

Princess Cruises earned a gold award for its use of low-sulphur fuels beyond the required levels, use of advanced wastewater treatment systems and marine sanitation devices, as well as zero discharge of ballast water in Puget Sound.

Both Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International were given a silver award for their respective use of low-sulphur fuels beyond the required levels and the use of advanced wastewater treatment systems.
