Energy producer and supplier Shell is to provide LNG fuel for AIDA Cruises’ AIDAprima and AIDAperla in all of the ports on their respective itineraries.

The recently delivered AIDAprima and her sister ship AIDAperla – currently under construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan – have been equipped dual-fuel engines, which will enable them to switch off their other engines and operate exclusively on LNG fuel while berthed in port. This will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 80% and carbon dioxide emissions by 20%.

Shell will supply LNG fuel via truck to several European ports, once they have each received permission to develop the necessary facilities. These include Hamburg, Germany; Southampton, UK; Le Havre, France; Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Zeebrugge, Belgium. AIDA will start the first LNG tests the week commencing 25 April.

“We believe LNG is the cleanest fossil fuel,” said Felix Eichhorn, president of AIDA. “In Shell, we have a strong global partner who will forge a new path with us in establishing LNG within the maritime industry. With the supply of LNG to AIDAprima when she is docked, we are setting a clear trend in terms of environmental and climate protection.”
