The Port of Skagen in Denmark is to welcome larger cruise ships from April 2015.

Skagen’s new DKK226 million cruise facilities are scheduled to open in April and will enable the port to accommodate cruise vessels of up to 330m alongside.

As part of the project, the port’s entrance has been extended from 80m to 250m, while the existing cruise pier was increased from 170m to 190m. The port has also created a new basin with a 450m quay.

Both quays will be fitted with passenger facilities that feature a lounge, toilets, a showroom, a crew lounge, information point and a bike rental kiosk. Passengers will be able to access free wifi while in the facility.

Skagen is to handle 15 cruise calls carrying up to 24,000 passengers in total, marking a 300% passenger increase from 2014. However, to avoid congestion, the port will cap its daily visitor total to 3,500 passengers.

The Cruise Skagen network, which was established in 2014, will continue to develop initiatives to boost cruise traffic. The association, which was established in 2014, has gained another ten members including tourist attractions, retailers, restaurants and taxi companies. It has also published a free Cruise Skagen Guide and Cruise map, which will be offered to all crew and passengers.
