UK-based SMC Design is to lead design efforts for a multi-million dollar interior refurbishment onboard Cunard Line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 next summer.
SMC previously led refit projects on three former Cunard ships – QE2, Cunard Countess and Cunard Princess – and was involved in designing its current fleet, which comprises Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. As part of the Queen Mary 2 project, the company will redesign the vessel’s interiors to introduce ‘classic Deco touches’ inspired by Cunard’s heritage, and new signature colour schemes, carpets, furniture and more decorative fixtures and fittings throughout.
“Cunard has a unique rich heritage in both the nautical and design fields and we have researched into these and looked to incorporate aspects of pattern and design into our plans," said Andrew Collier, SMC’s managing director. “Particular attention has been paid to taking inspiration from the original Queen Mary and our aim is to enhance existing designs as well as implement a decorative overhaul, looking to emphasise the feeling of understated elegance. Clean lines and simple designs will instil a sense of glamour and relaxation. We are very excited to be part of the project to bring a new look and style for the world's most famous ship.”
During the 25-day refit, which will take place from 27 May to 21 June, Queen Mary 2 will also be fitted with 15 new single cabins, 30 more Britannia Club cabins and an expanded area for pet kennels. She will also be updated with new features that have been tested with thousands of past and future Cunard guests worldwide over the past 18 months.
“Queen Mary 2 is the pride of the Cunard fleet,” said Richard Meadows, president of Cunard North America. “With SMC’s proven maritime design expertise, invaluable input from thousands of Cunard’s discerning, international guests and 175 years of history as our foundation, we look forward to even more exciting design innovations on the already legendary Queen Mary 2.”
