Start-up acquires Thomas Gunn

Maritime firm GNS lands worldwide navigation distributor and reseller

Thomas Gunn Navigation Services and Poly Thomas Gunn S A – known as Thomas Gunn – has been acquired by London start-up, Global Navigation Solutions (GNS), the newly formed firm said in a written statement on 22 November.

The combination of Thomas Gunn and GNS is likely to be attractive to shipping companies wanting greater value from their chart procurement and chart management strategies, according to the GNS statement.

“It is an exceptionally exciting time in the marine market,” Global Navigations Solutions CEO Mike Robinson said. “We are looking forward to working with Thomas Gunn to develop progressively more intelligent navigation solutions that give our customers increasingly tangible operational benefits.”

Thomas Gunn, current managing director of the Thomas Gunn, will assume responsibility for business development in the GNS group. He said: “GNS’ vision, experience and resources make it the ideal organisation to build on the success of the Thomas Gunn group of companies. We are delighted to be working with the GNS team going forward to continue to deliver industry-leading navigation services to our customers.”

One of the largest worldwide distributors of UK Hydrographic Office marine navigation products and services and an Electronic Chart Display and Information System reseller, Thomas Gunn also has a range of its own brand chart management and route planning tools including Voyager and TGT eData.

GNS is jointly owned by and its management team – headed by co-founder Mike Robinson – and investor Phoenix Equity Partners. The company was incorporated on 4 October and employs more than 150 people across offices in Canada, Greece, Singapore, Turkey and the UK.
