Sydney’s cruise industry has received a huge boost with the news that 214 ships will visit Australia’s most populous city this financial year, a 43 per cent increase on 2010.

The cruise industry is the fastest growing segment in Australian tourism, making massive strides, with 2011’s rise coming on top of a 27 per cent increase in 2010.

“The cruise industry in Sydney is in an extraordinary growth phase and it doesn’t look like slowing down,” said Sydney Ports Corporation CEO Grant Gilfillan.

“Sydney Ports will also undertake a significant upgrade of services and infrastructure needs at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay over the next couple of years.

“In addition, following an exhaustive consultation and planning stage, work will also begin on the new AUD$57 million terminal at White Bay, which will replace the temporary Wharf 5 terminal at Barangaroo.”

Bookings for 2012/2013 include maiden voyages for Costa Deliziosa, Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, Celebrity Solstice, Holland America's Zaandam and Princess's Sea Princess with total bookings amounting to 264 ships in total.
