UK-based marine interior refit firm Trimline is to upgrade the public spaces and cabins onboard two TT-Line Company Pty ferries in Australia.

The contract covers refit work onboard Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II, which sail on the Bass Strait from Melbourne to Devonport in Australia, taking between nine and 11 hours to complete the 232 nautical mile journey. Each of the 29,338gt ferries accommodates 500 vehicles and 1,140 passengers in eight deluxe and 148 standard cabins.

Work to upgrade the cabins, suites and public areas on decks 7 and 8, as well as the public areas on decks 9 and 10, will begin in late April and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. Trimline will work with a 100-strong team of specialists per vessel.

“Trimline is a highly regarded company that has completed significant, quality refurbishment works in the European ferry market,” said Mike Grainger, chairman of TT-Line Company Pty. “In appointing Trimline to undertake the work, we were not only impressed with its credentials but with its understanding of Spirit of Tasmania’s requirements and the key role it plays in the Tasmanian community and economy. Together we will roll out significant improvements to the vessels that will assist the government to increase visitor numbers to Tasmania to 1.5 million people a year by 2020.”

The contract, which is the company’s largest to date, will help Trimline to achieve a £30 million turnover.

“We believe our success was due to understanding TT-Line’s specific needs and meeting them, including setting up a local office in Devonport and working with local companies and suppliers,” said Trimline’s CEO Andrew Richards. “This project represents a huge vote of confidence from TT-Line and is a key project for Trimline in our 50th year. It will deliver unprecedented levels of comfort to their passengers, confirming that we are a world leader in marine refurbishment.”
