Offshore vessel fabrication and engineering solutions provider Triyards Holdings (Triyards) is to construct and outfit two cruise ships for the first time.

The yard, which works in the oil and gas industry, has secured contracts worth a total of around US$7.5 million from cruise operator Aqua Expeditions and passenger ship management company International Shipping Partners (ISP).

“These wins underscore a new chapter for Triyards and propels us into adjacent opportunities within the marine industry,” said Wong Bheet Huan, CEO of Triyards. “Our focus on building engineering capabilities has led to Triyards gaining recognition beyond work in the offshore oil and gas arena, and into the offshore tourism industry. This bodes well for our future as we continue to diversify and establish new revenue streams.”

Triyards will build the hull section and install piping, electrical and mechanical systems and equipment on Aqua Expeditions’ 63 metre Aqua Mekong over a nine-month construction period. It will also create a prototype of the vessel’s cabins. Aqua Mekong will operate in the Mekong River with high-end hotel and accommodation facilities when she enters service.

As part of the contract with ISP, Triyards will upgrade the accommodation areas of the 5,218 gt Silversea Cruises’ Silver Discoverer. Following a 12-week refurbishment period, the ship will feature a new gym, beauty salon and expedition cabins. Silver Discoverer will return to service at the end of spring 2014.
