Venice has inaugurated its new €12 million passenger terminal, located on its Tagliamento Quay, on 15 April.

Terminal 109/110 was developed as part of a project to transform Venice’s Marittima area from an old commercial port into a modern passenger terminal with a total surface area of more than 260,000 sq m. The area now consists of a 123,700 sqm water basin, eight passenger terminals, five car parks and more than 3,200 m of quays. This enables the port to handle two cruise ships simultaneously berthed in front of Terminal 107/108 and in front of the renovated 14,000 sq m Terminal 109/110, respectively.

Designed as an eco-sustainable building by architect Maurizio Paveggio and interior designer Vincenzo Di Donato, the terminal was developed in collaboration with Venice Port Authority and the terminal’s operator Venezia Terminal Passeggeri (VTP). It features elevators and escalators to improve passenger flow, as well as a conveyor belt system, which routes bags and luggage directly to the service quay through a tunnel located under the facility.

According to VTP’s chairman Sandro Trevisanato, the two-storey building is the Mediterranean’s widest terminal dedicated to a single cruise ship. He also said it “gives Venice and its citizens an important productive area” and “brings the Serenissima to the top levels of the international cruise industry, renovating and reinforcing the relationship between Venice and the sea.”
