Scandinavian operator Viking line has launched a new online booking service to enable passengers to compare prices and reserve tickets.
The new system, which has been rolled out gradually, is now available on the Viking Line website in multiple languages and can also be accessed via mobile devices.
“We live in an online society where more and more people prefer to handle their business transactions on the internet,” said Gustaf Eklund, head of Customer Business Development at Viking Line. “Our websites and booking system have to be responsive and easy to use. This means they must look good regardless of whether you are using a computer, tablet or smartphone.”
Using the new system, customers can view ticket prices on specific dates and compare them to other days for up to one month in advance. The system will also suggest ways the customers can save money – such as buying a full cruise ticket, rather than paying for two separate trips – and provide alternatives for sold-out voyages.
“A stepwise launch process has enabled us to minimise risks and fine-tune functionality before placing the system in service on a large scale,” said Kjell Lindvall, Web Development manager at Viking Line, who has led the online reform.
Today, almost 70% of Viking Line’s passengers book tickets online, which equates to around a million per year and shows a significant rise from just 25% in 2005. Almost half of these bookings are made by Finnish passengers, while other frequent guests include those from Sweden, Estonia, Germany and Russia.
