International wireless provider WMS is expanding its cellular and wi-fi services to ocean-going ferries.
WMS’s expanded solutions include a wi-fi portal, network design, installation, management and monitoring, all of which aims to provide ferry passengers with an onboard experience comparable to a cruise ship. The offering will require little onboard infrastructure but will deliver the industry’s “most robust” wi-fi and cellular service, according to WMS.
“WMS pioneered the first wireless network on a cruise ship 20 years ago, and our service is now on more than 200 ships,” said Michael Abdul, chief sales and marketing officer at WMS. “It is a natural extension to offer our high-demand service to ocean-going ferries. Our investment in technology and innovation will create value for ferry operators, passengers and crew alike.”
By offering seamless and affordable internet connectivity, the solution aims to significantly improve the passenger experience, as well as enabling onboard crews to stay connected to family and friends. WMS is rolling out its 5G system on cruise ships, which it hopes to expand to ocean-going ferries one day.
“Ferry passengers and crew require easier access to increased connectivity today more than ever,” said Kerry Pettitt, ferry sales director at WMS. “The WMS solution will satisfy the demand to stay in touch with family and friends during downtime on a ferry passage. Many also want to use this time to catch up on work or need to stay connected to work without interruption. This service will significantly modernise the experience previously available to this market.”
WMS, which has 20 years’ expertise in maritime connectivity, will showcase its solutions at SHIPPAX Conference, from 13-15 May onboard Tallink’s Baltic Queen.
