Marine solutions and service provider Wärtsilä is to supply the main propulsion generating sets for the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) ferry designed for domestic trade in the European Union (EU).

Wärtsilä will provide four of its 20DF dual-fuel engines, which can run on both LNG and traditional marine fuels to provide a high level of redundancy.

“The owners wanted to achieve the highest possible level of operational reliability to support the local business, while focusing on environmental sustainability and ensuring overall efficiency in energy consumption,” said Aaron Bresnahan, vice president of sales at Wärtsilä Ship Power.

Designed and processed for EU tender by OSK-ShipTech, the 600-passenger vessel will be built at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk, Poland and will operate under the Danish flag.

The 100 m ferry is owned by Samsø Municipality – which governs Samsø, Denmark’s first renewable energy island – and is one of the 30 LNG-fuelled newbuilds ordered for delivery within the next two years. It is scheduled to debut on 1 October 2014 and will service the route between Samsø and Jutland’s Hou harbour on the Danish mainland.
