Wärtsilä, a marine solutions and services provider, is to retrofit four exhaust gas cleaning systems to Norwegian operator Color Line’s SuperSpeed 2 ro-pax ferry in spring 2014.
The four separate open loop scrubber systems will ensure the ship’s full compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations, and with EU Directive 2055/33/EC.
They will also significantly reduce sulphur oxide and particulate emissions from the engines’ exhaust, enabling the 1,900-passenger SuperSpeed 2 to operate without restrictions in designated emission control areas. The vessel currently sails from Larvik in Norway to Hirtshals in Denmark.
Color Line intends to install the system – which is the first to have been awarded the IMO certificate for exhaust gas cleaning systems by the classification societies Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd – on three other vessels.
“Since 2009, all Color Line ships have maintained an environmental balance sheet that details emissions to air, and discharges to water and harbours,” said Jan-Helge Pile, senior vice president of marine operations at Color Line. “We believe that the Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems will significantly enhance our efforts in striving for sustainable operations.”
