AW / 20 Smooth seas ahead Foreword This has been an emotional issue for us to compile. As we all continue to endure personal and business hardships caused by the pandemic, hope remains our closest ally. We’ve been inspired by our industry’s leaders who have shared regular united and pragmatic perspectives. Royal Caribbean Group leader Richard Fain is characteristically clear about the path to restarting cruise operations in our keynote interview with him on page 14, saying: “Our approach must apply the best available science, technology, engineering and public health principles.” Passenger ferry operators are reporting encouraging signs for business bouncing back after their enforced break. Interferry CEO Mike Corrigan’s commentary on page 80 shows that he is upbeat about a resurgence in ferry travel, and ferry executives share his optimism in our Ferry Business roundtable on page 104. Thankfully, domestic ferry safety has remained a top priority during the crisis and International Maritime Organization’s Heike Deggim talks about progress and partnerships on page 140. The plight of seafarers has touched us all and while their welfare is finally centre stage, solutions must be fast and meaningful. World Maritime University’s Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry eloquently describes the issues in her interview on page 158. Our cover story on page 203 explores how key players are working together to rebuild the cruise industry, with the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Gloria Guevara saying: “We envision a future of travel which is safe, secure, seamless and provides an authentic and meaningful experience to the traveller.” Passenger shipping is a roller coaster business, and these are the worst of times. However, operators are working hard to introduce additional health and safety measures and reviews from passengers who have sailed since restrictions eased are encouraging. The rebirth of Swan Hellenic and other expected new entrants gives further cause for celebration, as do the stories of tireless innovation from the supplier community that are showcased throughout this issue. The best of times will come again. I hope that you find some pleasure and inspiration in the following pages. Jon Ingleton Executive Editor, Cruise & Ferry Review 5
