Cruise & Ferry Interiors 2020

1 1 6 INTERIOR COMMENTARY Raising the bar Restoration expert Magicman provides a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for passenger ship operators wanting to extend the life of onboard interiors R epair and restoration expert Magicman rejuvenates damaged and worn surfaces onboard passenger ships, extending the life and effectiveness of assets that would otherwise have to be replaced and sent to landfill in large quantities. Deck by deck, Magicman’s team identifies which bulkheads, fixtures and fittings need replacing in the areas through the ship, including common spaces, spas, whirlpools, cabins and staterooms. The team can save wood, laminate, uPVC, plastics, fibreglass, steel, brass, ceramics, marble and glass that has been mildly, or extremely, damaged. Magicman researches and develops products to ensure its repairs are permanent and match both the visible exterior and the substrate of the items it restores. We provide a truly sustainable solution and that’s why we’re thrilled to be shortlisted in the ‘Sustainable Product of the Year’ category of the inaugural Cruise Ship Interiors Awards. Like anyone with an extensive repair and restoration history, Magicman has turned its hand to the occasional bar job. For example, our technicians David Stout and Neil Duffin spent three days restoring Vintages wine bar on Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas. They cleaned, sanded down, and stripped back the bar and its many component panels and shelves, before staining and lacquering them to restore their original hue and lustre. In addition, they renewed the brass foot rail. Meanwhile, in the English-themed Henry’s Pub onboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Spirit, Henry was restored by Magicman technician Lee Boakes. Henry is just one of dozens of statues, figures and mascots of all shapes and sizes that have been repaired and renewed by Magicman operatives. In February 2020, Magicman had more than 100 cruise ship restoration projects firmly in the diary, putting us on track for our most successful year since the formation of our marine services arm. Then came the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced countries worldwide to implement tight lockdown restrictions. Now all these jobs are on hold while we all patiently prepare for restrictions to be relaxed and the inevitable bounce back of the cruise industry. Whether shipowners have bars like Vintages and Henry’s Pub, or other onboard venues, that need to be refurbished, they can rest assured that Magicman will be there to make sure that their ships are in pristine condition when normality returns.
