4 9 Building an original brand “Staying original is a challenge that many creative disciplines face today and one that SMC Design is acutely aware of. We see cultivating a considered brand as key to the success of our clients. Working collaboratively with our clients and fellow creatives from the early stages of the project allows us to lock in a core understanding of an area or the vessel as a whole. This groundwork enables us to shape an area’s identity with unique details to help it stand out not only onboard the vessel, but also among competitors on both sea and land.” Alun Roberts, Design Associate at SMC Design Choosing an effective colour palette “Colour preferences have shifted towards light and natural tones in recent times, perhaps due to our growing conscious affinity for the natural environment. Lighter colours are commonly associated with cleanliness and mindfulness, two emotive drivers of choice. However, bolder colours are gaining popularity in the hospitality sector. Warm colours on a backdrop of lighter tones can be a powerful design statement and, since red, green and blue lighting is more affordable nowadays, designers can use clever lighting to create a greater depth of feeling. Personally, I remain committed to using bold and bright colours to bring an interior space alive – such as onboard the new Mardi Gras where we’re seeking to deliver rich experiences.” Petu Kummala, Senior Director of Interior Design and Architecture, Newbuilds and Refurbishments at Carnival Cruise Line
