5 5 Ensuring refurbishment success “We work with many clients of differing management styles and fleets, but our most effective projects are with clients that trust us to solve problems, suggest alternatives and act like an extension of their team. Shipowners must embrace the relationship with their contractor and trust that they are equally invested in delivering a high-quality result. Keeping contractors at arm’s length in tendering and planning won’t allow them to show their true value. Long-term or repeat contracts are beneficial to shipowners and marine outfitting companies, but they cannot be built easily if the relationship is purely transactional.” Joep Bollerman, Global Manager of Lloyd’s Register’s Passenger Ship Support Centre Jorge Mesa, founding partner of Studio DADO Ross Welham, co-owner of Trimline Eco-friendly interior design “To reduce a ship’s energy consumption without compromising interior design, we can choose lighting carefully and collaborate with the manufacturers to ensure their products are energy efficient. Using sunshades and window treatments can also help. In addition, we can select local vendors and products, so they do not need to be shipped from overseas. This saves fuel and decreases the impact on our oceans. Similarly, we can indirectly reduce onboard energy costs by being aware of the weight of the materials we use in our designs. These materials affect the overall ship’s weight and stability, which impacts on fuel consumption.” Meeting fire test procedure code requirements “All materials used onboard passenger ships must comply with the Fire Test Procedure Code (FTP Code). The code describes the requirements that materials in different category spaces onboard vessels must meet and how to carry out testing to obtain certification. Classification societies are often requested to issue type approval certification for materials to confirm compliance with the FTP Code. Passenger ship operators often want this type approval before they even consider using materials, so it is critical that designers and project managers are aware of these requirements at early stages of projects to minimise risks and avoid costly delays.”
