Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2021
1 0 7 Making emissions compliance easy CR Ocean Engineering (CROE) has more than 60 years’ experience of desiging exhaust gas scrubbing systems. Today, CROE scrubbing systems are constructed entirely in metal, require no bypass or silencer, and can run dry. The systems, which are successfully operating on over 154 ships, reduce stack emissions of sulphur oxides, enabling ship operators to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s 0.1 per cent and 0.5 per cent sulphur oxide emissions limits. In addition, they are designed to meet future requirements for decreasing emissions of black carbon, particulate matter and PM2.5 (particles with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometres). CROE also provides systems to significantly improve the discharge of scrubber wash water. Running reliably Today’s passenger ships must have reliable engines and equipment that run quietly and meet strict environmental emission limits. Operators also seek to minimise operating costs. This is why Total Lubmarine has developed a comprehensive range of trunk piston oils suitable for high to medium- speed four-stroke diesel engines. For example, its Aurelia and Disola products guarantee high safety margins, and are compatible with all main fuel types, including low-sulphur fuel oil, liquified natural gas and marine gas oil. Total also offers synthetic ester environmentally acceptable lubricants to comply with regional environmental regulations, lubricants and greases that fulfil Vessel General Permit requirements for oil-to-sea interfaces. Why choose between price and safety? When choosing a battery system to power the electric or hybrid-electric propulsion systems on passenger ships, it is important to consider performance, price and safety. Saft’s Seanergy batteries use abuse- tolerant superphosphate lithium-iron phosphate technology that has been proven to be safe in systems up to 1,100 volts. The batteries are certified by Bureau Veritas, approved in principle by Lloyd’s Register and field-proven for reliability and safety in several hybrid electric marine vessels. Saft takes ownership of the entire manufacturing process – from the cells to the module and battery system – and offerings remote monitoring to ensure the overall safety and health of the system.
