Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2021

1 1 4 The way ahead The technologies that are essential for safely operating cruise ships and ferries and delivering high-quality connectivity services are evolving. CFR finds out more W hen the Phoenicians first set sail 4,000 years ago, they planned their voyages using charts and by observing the sun and the stars. It’s a far cry from the computerised navigation systems used by ships today. But what does the future hold? With a growing focus on sustainability, more nations are implementing restrictions on ships to ensure safe passage through their waters, with as little impact as possible on the ocean environment and marine life. Navigation solutions can help shipping operators to comply with these restrictions by providing greater visibility into boundaries and local alerts. At the same time, cruise and ferry passengers are demanding more from onboard technology, particularly in terms of connectivity. Crucially, these new technologies and initiatives are also being used to improve ship handling, ensure equipment works properly and ultimately prevent accidents. In the following pages, we highlight how some organisations are playing a role in modernising shipping navigation and communications. CFR FEATURE: NAV IGATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
