Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2021
1 6 2 Visitors to the Port of Dover can explore the history of the local area with trips to some of Britain’s iconic landmarks S ituated in south-east Kent, the Port of Dover is England’s gateway to the world and is ideally placed for a cruise to destinations in England and beyond. With capacity to accommodate three cruise ships at one time, the port can offer a range of varied activities and excursions. If they wish to stay in the local area, visitors can head to the White Cliffs to take in the fresh sea air and views of nature and seascapes toward France. Dover Castle is an equally iconic British landmark, having been a stronghold since Roman times. Guests can explore its royal history in the castle itself or its wartime connections in the underground tunnels, followed up by a trip to the Best Western Dover Marina Hotel for a classic British meal of fish and chips. Delving deeper into Kent can reveal even more varied and historic places such as Canterbury Cathedral, whose spires, cloisters and stained-glass windows are testament to the almost 1,000-year-old history of the site. Beyond, day trips can extend into the rich green countryside and places such as Leeds Castle, which continues to draw those looking to enjoy the preserved fortress, year-round gardens or relaxing punting excursions. In addition to visiting the local landmarks, cruise guests can enjoy eating and drinking local produce too, with one of Kent’s latest booming industries being wine production. Hush Heath Estate is one of the pioneers of English wines and it offers vineyard and winery tours, as well as a modern visitor centre and shop. All of these trips can be facilitated by YMS Travel, which provides transport of all sizes and ensures visitors feel safe and travel in comfort at the same time. Due to the current health crisis, many attractions have now received ‘Good to Go’ accreditation from VisitBritain, so that when guests are ready to travel, Dover is ready to receive them.
