Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2022

2 1 6 Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is collaborating on strategic environmental initiatives and increasing shore power capacity to support a sustainable future for cruising Forecasts show that nearly one million passengers are expected to arrive at the Port of Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise terminal during 300 vessel calls in 2022. To prepare for the season, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and its destination partners are working on protocols and procedures that will ensure a safe and sustainable restart, while maintaining a smooth guest experience. They are applying the highest practical level of safety standards for passengers, residents and employees and establishing clear communications with local communities, regulators and authorities. In addition to safety, the port authority is spearheading environmental programmes to support the sustainable future of cruise operations in Vancouver. One key priority is to increase shore power capacity at Canada Place cruise terminal, enabling every vessel to plug in if they want to do so by 2030. Since 2009, shore power at Canada Place has relied on clean hydroelectricity, and nearly 50 per cent of enabled vessels were able to plug in at the port during the 2019 season. In 2022, more than 60 per cent of all visiting ships are expected to be shore power enabled. Shore power installations at the Port of Vancouver cruise ship terminal and container terminals have eliminated 691 tonnes of air pollutants and 25,495 tonnes of greenhouse gases over the past 13 years. The port authority’s EcoAction Program provides fee reduction incentives and recognition of eligible cruise lines who employ best practices to help reduce the environmental impacts of shipping. It is also exploring LNG and alternative fuel sources and ways to advance the award-winning ECHO Program to help protect the endangered southern resident killer whales. For more than 35 years, Vancouver is a leading homeport for cruises to Alaska and is the only one to offer both one-way and roundtrip itineraries through Canada’s scenic Inside Passage to Alaska. The Vancouver cruise industry is a key contributor to the local economy, stimulating $3.17 million in direct economic activity for each ship that calls at Canada Place and $2.2 billion of total economic impact. A city like no other, Vancouver is also a destination in its own right. Vancouver combines the excitement and energy of a modern city with the invigorating appeal of the great outdoors. Canada Place, located in downtown Vancouver, is an internationally recognised landmark and multipurpose venue for world-class events.
