Cruise & Ferry Review - Autumn/Winter 2024

73 AE Expeditions, part of Aurora Expeditions, offers expedition cruises on its ships Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle, with a third ship, Douglas Mawson, launching in December 2025. All are part of SunStone Maritime Group’s Infinity-class series. Greg Mortimer was the first passenger ship in the fleet to feature the X-Bow hull design, which not only reduces fuel consumption and overall emissions, but also offers a smoother and quieter ride for passengers, according to AE Expeditions. The hull design also offers greater stability in challenging environments, enabling ships to continue in difficult weather conditions. “The design of these vessels focuses on overall efficiency and operability with a comfortable passenger experience,” says Andrew Turner, sales director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa at AE Expeditions. “The ships’ size is optimised to reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact. This is also minimised thanks to the ships’ anchoring system, which allows it to remain in a set position without a physical anchor, minimising harm to delicate seabeds. The ships’ onboard desalination plants enable us to convert seawater into fresh water that’s safe to drink, which means ships can carry less fresh water on sea crossings, further reducing fuel consumption.” The interior of expedition cruise ships is just as thoughtfully considered. Greg Mortimer’s interior was designed by Tomas Tillberg Design. “Expedition cruise guests aren’t looking for a huge ship with aqua parks and glamourous entertainment options; they want a ship that sails smoothly and has warm and comfortable lounges, dining venues and cabins to relax in after a long day of outdoor adventures,” says Nedgé Louis-Jacques, partner and vice president of design at Tomas Tillberg Design. “We put a lot of effort into choosing the furniture, furnishings and the interior layouts to create a cosy and calming atmosphere onboard each vessel.” “Expedition cruise vessels must embody the authentic journey and enhance the experience of the surrounding nature of the unique destination,” says Emilie Posniak Hansen, architect at OSK Design, the Danish naval architects behind SunStone’s Boundless series. Hansen says the design “underscores how the right ship can seamlessly balance onboard experience, comfort and adventure, while aligning with the ethos of exploration and sustainability.” “ Thoughtful design features make our expedition cruise ships exceptionally well-suited for adventurous and immersive experiences” Arjun Sinsinwar, Antara Cruises SunStone’s Boundless series, designed by OSK Design, offers passengers a luxurious onboard experience FEATURE
