208 NORTH AMERICA: REPORT From the moment a ship drops anchor to when it sets sail, the Port of San Diego aims to deliver a premier experience for cruise lines and guests alike. The port focuses on investing in important developments such as clean energy and shore power to ensure it can continue to maintain a high standard of service for its visitors. In 2010, the Port of San Diego was one of the first ports in California to implement shore power. It doubled its shore power capabilities in 2023 and plans to further expand its capacity in 2024. Shore power has significantly benefited guests by improving air quality and reducing pollutants such as nitrogen oxide, diesel particulate matter, and greenhouse gas emissions on and around San Diego Bay. These improvements are helping San Diego’s ‘Port of Land and See’ in its efforts to develop itself as an attractive destination to begin or end a cruise journey. After a 2023 cruise season of over 100 cruise ship calls and 360,000 passengers, the port’s shore power expansion is part of its strategy to continue delivering a premier standard for cruise lines and its guests. The shore power expansion will offer more cruise ships the opportunity to plug in and use clean energy while their guests partake in all the ‘Port of Land and See’ has to offer – a rich cultural experience, relaxation, and thrilling adventures.
